What it actually says

Ringelmann's early rope-pulling observations suggested that groups produced less force than the sum of individuals tested alone. Later research separated coordination loss - timing and direction mismatch - from motivation loss or social loafing when individual contributions are less identifiable.

The effect depends on production technology. Additive tasks can gain total output despite declining per-person output. Conjunctive tasks are limited by the weakest or slowest contributor. Disjunctive and knowledge tasks may benefit from diverse expertise while paying communication and integration costs.

Historical Ringelmann data and modern social-loafing paradigms are not identical. Physical pulling, brainstorming, software, emergency response, and creative work combine effort differently.
