Repeated, unreinforced exposure to a stimulus can increase average liking or positive evaluation, especially when the stimulus is initially unfamiliar and exposure remains moderate.

What it actually says

The mere-exposure effect describes an average change in evaluation after repeated contact without explicit reward. One explanation is processing fluency: familiar stimuli are easier to perceive and encode, and that ease can be experienced as positive when it is not attributed to repetition or another source.

Repetition does not overwrite strong negative meaning. Initially disliked, threatening, annoying, or coercively repeated stimuli can show weak, absent, or negative effects. Recognition, boredom, demand characteristics, context, and spacing change the curve.
