Linguistic Relativity
The categories and habitual distinctions encoded by a language can influence attention, memory, and judgment in some tasks without rigidly determining what its speakers can perceive or think.

There is no single Sapir-Whorf equation. Strong linguistic determinism is not supported. Contemporary work tests narrower effects on color, space, time, number, agency, and memory while separating language from culture and experimental demand.

What it actually says
Linguistic relativity is best treated as a family of precise questions: does using a particular linguistic distinction change performance on a particular nonlinguistic task, under specified conditions? Effects can involve attention, encoding, memory, or decision strategy.
Modern evidence rejects the idea that speakers are trapped inside an incommensurable worldview. People can learn new categories, reason without verbal labels, and adapt strategies. Language is one influence among perception, culture, expertise, environment, and task design.

How the pattern works

Where it earns its keep
Applications are strongest when the law changes a decision, measurement, model, or experiment rather than merely providing an analogy.
Localize conceptual categories, not only words
